Squirrel monkeys are noisy, energetic little monkeys that live in large troops with as many as 300 members.
They spend most of their time in trees, scrambling around in the branches searching for fruit, their favorite food, as well
as insects, seeds, and the occasional fruit bat. Young squirrel monkeys are very playful, often engaging in mock battles with
each other. The young are raised by their mother, who is sometimes assisted by childless females known as "aunts."
Look
For: A small, slender monkey with a very long tail. Most common species has a gray coat and yellow legs. Other species
yellow-brown to yellow overall with a black patch on the top of the head.
Length: Body 8-12" long, tail 14-18" long; 1-2 lb. Habitat: Tropical
rain forests, other forest types, mangrove swamps, thickets. Range: South
America and Central America.
